Halloween Costumes - How to Choose the Right Costume

Coming up with a great Halloween costume year after year can often be difficult. While there are a wealth of ideas out there to choose from, sometimes your mind goes blank or you've simply tried them all before. Luckily however, in these days of search engines and the Internet, inspiration is only ever a few clicks away. While getting ideas from family and friends can still be a good idea, they tend to come up with the same old ideas and costumes time and time again. When using online forums and dedicated Halloween websites however, it is easy to be inspired by brand new costumes you may have never thought of before.

Halloween has its roots in the Celtic holiday known as Samhain, falling on October 31 and marking the end of the lighter half of the year. Basically, Samhain - and Halloween - falls half way between the autumn equinox and the winter solstice, roughly dividing the year into eight separate sections that were often celebrated in ancient cultures. The increase of darkness is the basic principle behind the Halloween holiday, and as such, costumes are all about being dark, scary, and sometimes simply just absurd. There are a number of great Halloween websites out there that are dedicated to illustrating some of these great costume ideas, many of which are also available for hire.

Some of the most popular Halloween costumes are also the easiest to put together, including the gypsy, the ghost, the pirate, and the cowboy. There is nothing particularly scary about dressing up as a cowboy however, and a pair of jeans and checkered shirt could well be considered a cop-out. Some other more creative ideas include a witch, a wizard, a cartoon character, or a politician - no-one is going to argue that a politician costume is not scary. While it can be hard to choose a Halloween costume, it gets easier if you keep a few basic things in mind. Firstly, dress appropriately for your sex, your age group, and your size. Secondly, think about whether you want to hire or make your costume. Thinking like this is also a good way to cut down on costume choices, and the process of elimination should eventually lead you to the perfect costume for you.
